Greetings! I’m Mia Erickson. If you’re looking for ideas to get outside, explore nature, or just find fun things to do in and around Brainerd, here are several parks, attractions, and activities that offer something for everyone.
Top Parks & Beaches
Lum Park Recreation Area
Located right off Rice Lake, Lum Park has it all—sandy beach for swimming, boat launch, fishing pier, picnic shelters, disc golf, playgrounds, even RV camping. It’s a go-to spot for a full day outdoors without heading far out of town.
Whipple Beach Recreational Area
Found in Baxter, this beach area offers swimming, picnic pavilions, playgrounds, restrooms, and great lake views—perfect for families looking for relaxed water-side afternoons.
Rotary Riverside Park
Set along the Mississippi River, this 38-acre park features both paved and natural trails, an observation deck over the river, plenty of green space and a pavilion you can reserve. Great for walking, birdwatching, or a peaceful picnic.
Trails, Forests, and Arboretum
Paul Bunyan State Trail
This is a paved trail stretching well over 100 miles, ideal for biking, hiking, or rollerblading during warmer months; many people also enjoy snowmobiling or cross-country skiing parts of it when winter comes.
Northland Arboretum
More than 400 acres with lit trails, woodland, prairie restoration areas, and quiet spots to unwind. A beautiful escape when you want nature close to home.
Crow Wing State Forest & Pillsbury State Forest
Both are within driving distance and offer miles of hiking, horseback riding, and places to get lost in the woods or beside rivers. Especially good if you want to extend your adventure over a few days.
Family-Friendly Attractions & Events
Paul Bunyan Land & Safari North Wildlife Park
Fun destinations that appeal especially to children. Amusement rides, animal encounters, and interactive exhibits make them lively spots when folks want something beyond the natural outdoors.
Piers, Fishing & Lake Life
Take advantage of boat launches, piers, and lakeshore spots around Gull Lake, Crosslake, Rice Lake and more. Whether you’re fishing, paddling or just watching the sunset over the water, there are plenty of waterfront escapes.
