The Brainerd City Council has approved an interim use permit for the Bridge on 7th shelter, allowing it to operate year-round. This decision marks a significant step in providing continuous support for the unhoused population in the Brainerd area.
Since its opening in 2021, the Bridge on 7th has operated seasonally. The new permit, effective through April 30, 2027, enables the shelter to remain open during the summer months, a period when services were previously unavailable. This change addresses a critical gap in support for individuals experiencing homelessness in our community.
The shelter, managed by the faith-based nonprofit Bridges of Hope, has worked closely with local authorities to develop a comprehensive public safety plan. This collaboration aims to ensure the shelter’s operations align with community standards and safety expectations. Additionally, the shelter has established partnerships with various social service organizations and introduced the Pathways program, designed to assist guests in securing employment, housing, and other essential services.
While some concerns about potential public safety issues and attracting individuals from outside the community were raised, the council’s unanimous approval reflects confidence in the shelter’s management and its commitment to addressing these concerns proactively.
The Bridge on 7th’s year-round operation is a testament to Brainerd’s dedication to supporting all residents, ensuring that those in need have access to shelter and resources throughout the year.
