Brainerd’s Bridge on 7th Shelter to Operate Year-Round

The Brainerd City Council has approved an interim use permit for the Bridge on 7th shelter, allowing it to operate year-round. This decision marks a significant step in addressing the needs of the unhoused population in our community.

Since its opening in 2021, the Bridge on 7th, managed by the nonprofit Bridges of Hope, has provided seasonal shelter. The new permit, effective through April 30, 2027, enables continuous support for those in need. Shelter staff are required to submit annual reports to the Council, ensuring ongoing oversight and accountability.

In the past, concerns about attracting individuals from outside the community and potential public safety issues led to the denial of year-round operations. However, collaborative efforts between the shelter and local authorities have resulted in a comprehensive public safety plan, addressing these concerns and fostering a safer environment for all residents.

Bridges of Hope has also established partnerships with various social service organizations and introduced the Pathways program, aimed at assisting guests in securing employment and housing. These initiatives reflect a holistic approach to supporting individuals experiencing homelessness in Brainerd.

The unanimous approval by the City Council underscores a collective commitment to providing consistent and compassionate support to our community members in need.
